How to Teach Our Kids to Defend Their Faith

A camper and coach

When our college staff was asked something they wish their parents taught them growing up, defending their faith…knowing the “why” to what they believe as Christ followers was among the top responses! Walt gives us a boost of confidence through “how to” and resources as we parents aim to help our kids do just that.

But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.

1 Peter 3:15

The word “apologetics” comes from the Greek word “apologia,” which means “to make a defense.” When we use this term in a Christian context it involves learning to defend our faith.

But practically how do we do that as a parent? First, we have an active faith and a willingness to defend it. It is hard to teach someone else until we have learned it ourselves…this includes passing things along to our kids.

Let’s remember, this generation wants to know the “why” to most things in life!  We can help them with why we believe following Jesus Christ is the way to go.

Parents, consider digging into an online resource where you can learn at your own pace. I suggest utilizing Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM). CARM provides opportunities to learn…

  1. Theology
  2. Apologetics
  3. Critical Thinking

…in a safe setting. Explore the various offerings like: “New Articles” and “Bible Difficulties”. This site is one older children (high school and beyond) will benefit from as well.

Research together with your child. Have a dialogue with your child where you discuss the issues which arise. No need to fear questions they may have.  Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know!” But, then be ready to accept the challenge of learning.

Consider “Case Maker’s Academy” arising from Cold Case Christianity by J. Warner Wallace. Begin to develop resources in your home which you refer to regularly when you have questions about your faith. For Theology I recommend Charles Ryrie’s Basic Theologywhich features helpful charts, a Scripture and subject index, and definitions.

T Bar M has a number of individuals with years of ministry experience who regularly give advice on numerous Bible and Christian Faith related topics. Email back to Family Matters; we would love to be a helpful resource.

Christian apologetics is something every true believer should be involved in even if it starts a little slowly. Greater capacity is built over time. Confidently defending our faith with gentleness and reverence communicates to those around us that our faith is important to us

And the importance of faith in Christ is a clear message we want to convey to our kids!

Let's get to work!

I didn't know the value of good o manual labor until that first Training Camp at T Bar M in 1993, but it did set foundations that I continue to use today. The outcome of two hours of painting fences and moving rocks was quite more than two checks on the "to do" list. It […]
