The Value in Asking for Help
Why is asking for help so hard? Dads don’t like to ask for directions. Kids want to do it all on their own. Cole points us to the truth about the value of asking for help.
Ephesians 4:16, “From Him [Christ] the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
The tremendous benefits of asking for help carries into our every area of life…for our entire life. Learning this earlier rather than later can make life richer. In our family my wife is our “social coordinator”. Sometimes I would like to have a family over for dinner. She loves coordinating it and I love her help to make it happen! It is a win-win for both of us.
Here are three things to spur us on to ask for help:
- Asking for help shows humility and keeps our pride at bay. Thinking we can do things on our own only leads to destruction. The Lord makes this very apparent to us in Proverbs 11:2, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” And Proverbs in 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before the fall.”
- Asking for help is often a blessing to those we ask. I love that the Lord uniquely creates us all. In our uniqueness we have different strengths and weaknesses as well as different joys and pains. We can rest assured that there are many out there who actually enjoy the very things that are a struggle for us. Take a look at Ephesians 4:16…this example of the “body growing so that it builds itself up in love” can be seen as us working together to complete one another in our strengths and weaknesses so we can serve our Lord well.
- Ultimately we know and trust that our help comes from the Lord! The Lord tells us He will never leave us or forsake us. He also instructs us in Philippians 4:6 to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” David confirms in Psalm 121 that from the beginning to the end our help comes from the Lord…we can count on it!
Ultimately we know the Lord is where we need to go for direction, but coming together to work on the nuts and bolts of life is a huge victory for all of us!

Think of a time you had to ask for help. This is a skill and lesson you will continue to learn throughout your life. The Lord tells us over and over that we are imperfect and in need of a Savior…which is why He sent Jesus. Secondly we need each other.
The hardest part in asking for help is to get the words to come out of your mouth. Once you get the ball rolling it is a blessing to get some help. Next time you have a problem…remember that your asking could be a HUGE blessing to someone else as well as you!
